A clever front running ride from Glyn Schofield saw French import Singing collect a hat trick of wins with a runaway victory in the Listed $150,000 Gosford Quarries Gold Cup (2100m) at Gosford today.
Schofield allowed Singing to balance up from the wide barrier in the early stages of the race before letting Singing stroll to the front and the Kris Lees trained import was never headed.
Schofield was able to slow the tempo in the middle stages but when the pressure was applied by Evangelist ($201) at the 800m, Singing had plenty in reserve in the run to the line.
The $2.90 favourite was never in trouble of defeat and when the second pick Red Excitement ($4.40) started to chase at the 250m mark, Singing was well and truly gone and went on to record a three lengths win.
Locally trained Mighty Lucky ($4.80) ran his usual honest race to claim third place.
Winning trainer Kris Lees said that Singling has had a lot of issues since arriving from Europe but is very pleased that he is now sound and winning races for his connections.
Lees took Singing to Brisbane to start his winning run and returned to Newcastle with a Doomben double under his belt.
“I am really thrilled for the owners because they have been so patient with this horse,” Lees said.
“He has had a lot of troubles and for him to find the form that we expected is very satisfying for my staff.”
“He has had a lot issues, feet troubles. He has found his form now and it is really pleasing to see.”
“He is pretty fit and he had to be today. They served it up to him. He had to do all the work himself from the wide gate.”
“Glyn rode him perfectly and he looked home a long way from home.”
Lees said that he will monitor how Singing recovers from today’s win and if he pulls up okay could go around in the Listed $150,000 Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Warwick Farm on January 26.
“When he is in form you loath to stop because he does have a few issues,” Lees said.
“We may look at the Australia Day Cup on Friday week, but we will just see how he comes through today.”
