Team Williams will be shooting for a fifth Sydney Cup when they saddle up Almandin and Aloft on day two of The Championships on Saturday.
The 2016 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin has drifted in betting from $3.50 out to $3.90 despite drawing barrier 5 for the time-honoured race.
Despite steering Almandin to victory last start in the Tancred Stakes for the first time since he won the Melbourne Cup in 2016, Kerrin McEvoy will ride Aloft at 51KG on Saturday for the team.
Ladbrokes has pushed Aloft’s price out from $6 to $8 after drawing barrier five.
Kiwi raider Sir Charles Road earned his spot in the Group One Sydney Cup after his impressive win in the Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) last week. He drops 6 kgs from that win, has drawn well in barrier 4 and has been $10 into $7 since the barrier draw.
Who Shot The Barman will line up in his fifth consecutive Sydney Cup on Saturday as a rising nine year old. The ever consistent stayer is coming off a fast finishing third in the Tancred Stakes (2400m) behind Almandin who he meets 2 kgs better at the weights on Saturday. He has drawn barrier 10 and is currently $14 in betting.
One of the favourites of the field, Single Gaze, will be having her first start at Randwick since she fell in the ATC Oaks in 2016. She has been a gem of a horse for trainer Nick Olive and jockey Kathy O’Hara in recent times and is as tough as they come. She is $21 in betting.
