Lindsay Park head trainer David Hayes considers Boom Time to be well over the odds for the Group 1 $6.25m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday.
Boom Time was a shock $101 winner of the Group 1 $3.15m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 21 but Hayes said that the Flying Spur six year old had come through the run in terrific order and was spot on for the tough two miles at Flemington next week.
Betting for the Melbourne Cup at Ladbrokes.com.au has Boom Time marked at $34 but Hayes said that those odds are well over the mark.
“And I would say this horse the way he has trained on is going to run a lot better than his odds suggest,” Hayes told Sky Racing’s HQ.
“I have watched that Caulfield Cup thirty times and apart from probably Marmelo, no horse finished better than him.”
“He has got no weight (in the Melbourne Cup) and he has bounced out of the (Caulfield) Cup and he is incredibly fit and he is a tough horse that makes his own luck.”
“Going into the (Caulfield) Cup, the run in the lead up race, the Herbert Power was very similar, if not better than Fraar’s (1993 Caulfield Cup winner) and it turned out that way.
“It was a hard run Caulfield Cup which normally suggests that they will stay.”
Cory Parish has been aboard Boom Time for his last two starts and has been booked to ride the six year old gelding again in the Melbourne Cup.
