Doomben Cup winner Comin’ Through resumed for his 2018 Spring Carnival campaign with a solid win in the Group 2 $200,000 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick today.
Comin’ Through had to withstand a protest from third placegetter Dixie Blossoms after Christian Reith fired in a protest for interference in the early stages of the straight.
After hearing evidence from Reith and winning jockey Michael Walker, Racing New South Wales stewards dismissed the objection, leaving Comin’ Through as the winner.
Comin’ Through was having his first run back from a spell after winning the Group 1 $650,000 Hardy Brothers Doomben Cup (2000m) at Doomben during the 2018 Brisbane Winter Carnival and will now head to Melbourne for the Group 1 $750,000 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 15.
Winning jockey Michael Walker had Comin’ Through ($8) travelling in the middle of the pack and was able to secure a run in between runners in the straight and went on to record a neck win over his stablemate Tom Melbourne ($5).
The Ron Quinton trained Dixie Blossoms ($12) worked home out wide to gain third spot.
“Comin’ Through is a winner. He doesn’t win by far but he gets the job done more often than not. Michael Walker does a great job with the horse and it’s a good team to work with Sir Owen Glen,” Winning trainer Chris Waller said.
“I think a race like the Underwood. He will be handicapped out of an Epsom so we thought Makybe Diva next would be suitable, over mile at Flemington, just keep changing things with him which keeps him interested and helps me split a few of them up as well.”
The $2.80 favourite Le Romain had a tough run just behind the leaders out wide without cover and never challenged in the straight to finish seventh, one and a half lengths behind the winner.
