Four times Cox Plate winner Winx has returned a clean bill of health following her historic win at The Valley last Saturday and is ready for a relaxing Christmas break.
Winx created history when she won her fourth consecutive Group 1 $5m Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) and trainer Chris Waller immediately organised a complete vet check before heading to the spelling paddock.
“She’s had a vet check from head to toe, inside and out, and everything came back very well,” Waller told AAP.
“There’s been no noticeable changes and the vet is very happy with her condition. You’re seeing that in her races and we’re seeing that in her body language.
“So the plan is to let all the emotions go, get Christmas out of the way, the horse can kick her heels up in the paddock, which is so important and that’s been a big part of her longevity.”
Waller also had a debrief with Winx’s owners and jockey Hugh Bowman after the super star mare created history with her fourth Cox Plate victory, her twenty-second Group 1 win, her twenty-ninth win in a row and her thirty-third win overall.
“The latest is we had a meeting yesterday with the owners, myself and (jockey) Hugh Bowman and basically it was just about reflecting on what’s just happened and how great a week it was,” Waller said.
“After Christmas we’ll get together and have a chat and see where we’re heading.
“I don’t think there will be any huge surprises but I think the owners deserve, my stable deserves, Hugh Bowman deserves, just a little bit of time for everything to get back to normal because it has been one heck of a ride.”
The obvious questions that will be discussed is if Winx will be prepared for a 2019 Sydney Autumn Carnival campaign or be retired and prepare to be brood mare.
Winx’s race record: 39 starts: 33 wins, 3 seconds, 0 thirds. Prizemoney earnings: $22,934,924.
