A last to first win by Broadwayandfourth saw the Mitch Freedman trained filly down the more fancied runners in the Listed $175,00 PFD Food Services Crockett Stakes (1200m) at The Valley today.

Broadwayandfourth was sent out as one of the outsiders of the nine horse field for the three years old fillies at the handy odds of $17 and after Ben Melham settled near the tail of field, elected to stick to the inside in the straight to record a one length win.
The West Australian trained filly Niccovi ($14) was also at double figure odds and ran on to fill the runner’s up spot ahead of the $1.75 favourite Villami who led the field into the straight.
Broadwayandfourth was coming off a last start win in a Ballarat maiden but trainer Mitch Mitchell said that the Smart Missile filly had always shown plenty of ability.
“She has always shown us a lot of ability at home,” Freedman said.
“Things didn’t quite work out during the run but we walked the track together, Benny and I, and we probably found the right path in the straight.”
“It was good to see her get around the corner and get a clear run through once she switched courses.”
“She was strong through the line and she is a good filly.”
“She has probably raced around those black type horses in her two maidens and we knew she was up to it and Benny was pretty confident today.”
Melham is riding in great form and it was his second visit to the winner’s stall after sharing the top spot on dead heater La Falaise in the previous race, the Group 2 $300,000 Antler Luggage Fillies Classic (1600m).
