Jason Collett is hooked on smart three year old Addictive Nature who takes on weight for age for the first time in the Group 2 $200,000 Sydney Markets Limited Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
Collett will be having his first race ride on the lightly raced Addictive Nature but did get a feel of the Bjorn Baker trained colt with a two and a half lengths win in a 900m Rosehill barrier trial on January 22.
“I’ve had quite a few spins on him in trackwork so it was nice to get on him in a trial and he seems to be coming up really well,’’ Collett told Racing New South Wales News.
“It was what we wanted. We got cover, he relaxed okay and finished it off very strongly. It was a good feel.’’
Addictive Nature has drawn barrier two in the eight horse Expressway Stakes field that is made up of five three-year-olds and three older sprinters.
Collett is very confident in Baker’s decision to run Additive Nature in weight for age company first up in his preparation that could end up with a run in the Group 1 $1m Girvan Waugh Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Randwick on March 10.
“It does look like a nice race and he’s experienced enough,’’ Collett said.
“You hear weight-for-age and that sounds like it’s the deep end but you look at the race and it’s a bunch of three-year-olds and a few older horses.
“He oozes class, that’s for sure.
“That’s why Bjorn has put him in this race first-up, he feels he is classy enough and it is a nice stepping stone towards the (Randwick) Guineas.’’
Addictive Nature has already shown glimpses of above average ability with two wins and two placings from four race starts, which includes a win against the three year olds in the Group 3 $150,000 Monaco Cup – Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Rosehill during the 2017 Sydney Spring Carnival.
The Savabeel colt is resuming from a spell after running third to Gold Standard in the the Group 2 $200,000 Kari Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill in September.
Addictive Nature is well in contention in the betting for the Expressway Stakes and is the $3.30 second favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au behind the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Global Glamour at $3.
The Gerald Ryan trained Golden Rose winner Trapeze Artist is also resuming and has been well supported in the early betting to be the third pick at $4.20 while Baker will also saddle up $13 chance Goodfella.
