Ladbrokes Stakes winner Cape Of Good Hope will be trained as a sprinter-miler for the 2020 Autumn Carnival with the Group 1 $3m Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on Day One Of The Championships a major target.
The imported Cape Of Good Hope kicked off his career in Ireland under the care of champion trainer Aidan O’Brien before being purchased by Lindsay Park and a number of stable clients and was then set for a 2019 Melbourne Spring Carnival campaign.
The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig were able to prepare Cape Of Good Hope for a first up win in the Group 1 $1m Ladbrokes Stakes over 2000m at Caulfield on October 12.
Cape Of Good Hope had two more Spring Carnival outings and never threatened when tenth in the Group 1 $5m Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley followed by a last of sixteen in the Group 1 $2m Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on the last day of the 2019 Melbourne Cup Carnival.
David Hayes wasn’t happy with the way Cape Of Good Hope pulled up after the Mackinnon Stakes and decided to give the future stallion prospect a little longer in the paddock before training him for the shorter trips during the Autumn.
“He came out of his last run and was full of ulcers. All the travelling to America and back and then out here, I think it got the better of him in the end so I reckon he can improve,” David Hayes told AAP.
“He’ll be trained for sprinting from a stallion angle and to see if we can make him sprint.”
“He’ll be set for the Futurity and maybe the Doncaster. It’s a bit different, but this way I can give him a bit of a longer break.”
Hayes will also target Cape Of Good Hope for the Group 1 $500,000 Futurity Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield at the end of February before turning his attention to the Sydney Autumn Carnival and The Championships.
Cape Of Good Hope is the winner of three of his thirteen race starts and has earned just over $1 million in prizemoney.
