A good barrier draw and a classy ride gave Perudo the edge to take out the Listed $200,000 City Property Services Bill Carter Stakes (1200m) at Doomben today.
Winning jockey Brad Stewart tucked Perudo away in the sixteen horse field after jumping from barrier three and brought her with a well timed run in the straight to claim a narrow victory.
The lightly raced Tony Gollan trained filly was resuming after a short break following her fourth on a heavy track at the Gold Coast in March and now has a two from two perfect first up record.
Perudo was solid in the betting at $6.50 and was bale to nose out the fast finishing Gem Of Scotland ($4.40) with the winner’s stablemate Niedorp ($16) a close up third.
The heavily backed favourite California Zimbol ($2.60) was always caught wide from an outside gate and the Peter and Paul Snowden trained filly still tried hard in the straight under James McDonald and wound up in fifth position.
Gollan said that there wasn’t much between his two fillies, Perudo and Niedorp who had to jump from a wide barrier.
Gollan is hoping that Perudo’s luck will continue in two weeks time and hopes for another good barrier draw when she returns to Doomben for the Listed $125,000 Oxlade Stakes (1200m).
“She will come back here for the Oxlade and hopefully the barrier Gods will shine on me again and give me a nice soft inside draw,” Gollan said.
“She ran in the very heavy track in the Aquis Jewel at the Gold Coast and then we gave her a couple of weeks off.”
“She came back in and did really well, she had a nice jump out here ten days ago. Pretty confident she was on song for this today and then she drew the good gate. I had three fillies in the race and there is very little between all three and we have seen two of them very close together again.”
“Just the barriers. She got a beautiful run through and Brad gave her the right run.”
