Lindsay Park’s head trainer David Hayes disagrees with the bookies and thinks that his Caulfield Cup winner Boom Time is over the odds for the Group 1 $6.25m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday.

Bookies at Ladbrokes.com.au have Boom Time marked as a $26 chance but Hayes can see that as being very generous after the six year old scored a shock win at $101 in the Group 1 $3.15m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 21.
“He’s the longest priced Caulfield Cup winner to run in the Melbourne Cup so rather than take exception to it, we’ll embrace it and try and capitalise on it,” Hayes told AAP.
“Boom Time’s a Caulfield Cup winner with no weight and the horse that ran third (Johannes Vermeer) is one of the favourites.”
“I’ve always thought Ventura Storm was the best, but obvious form is good form and he (Boom Time) is a Caulfield Cup winner.”
Caulfield Cup winning jockey Cory Parish will ride Boom Time again in the Melbourne Cup from barrier nine while Lindsay Park’s other runner Ventura Storm will jump from barrier six with three times Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss in the saddle.
Ventura Storm finished six and a half lengths behind his stablemate Boom Time when thirteenth in the Caulfield Cup but Hayes said that he will be spot on for the Melbourne Cup.
“The Caulfield Cup was a hard run and I had kept him fresh for it,” said David Hayes who trains in partnership with his son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig.
“On the day I thought I might have mucked it up and had him a bit underdone trying to make him sharper.
“I think with that good mile-and-a-half run and a lot of work since, trained European style, he’s responded well.”
Ventura Storm is also at long double figure odds at $34 for the Melbourne Cup with Ladbrokes.com.au who now have the Hughie Morrison trained English stayer Marmelo as the $8.50 favourite replacing last year’s winner Almandin who is now marked at $9.
