Second emergency Minhaaj’s price for the Group 1 $3.5m Longines Golden Slipper at Rosehill on Saturday has almost halved after the unbeaten filly gained a spot in the 1200m scramble for the two year olds.
Lindsay Park’s head trainer David Hayes was at first disappointed that Minhaaj missed a place in the sixteen horse Golden Slipper field when it was released on Tuesday when she was relegated to the second emergency spot, but with two early scartchings, the unbeaten filly now finds herself ready to take her place in the glamour two year old race.
The Chris Waller trained Global Quest and Ciaron Maher and David Eustace’s Cellsabeel were both declared as non-runners after succumbing to separate ailments and disappointment turned to excitement for the Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig.
“Someone else’s misfortune is our fortune but we were pretty excited to get her in,” Hayes told Racenet.
“Her work the Sydney way of going on Monday morning was outstanding.
“She took time on her shins and she took time on her joints so before we put any pressure on her we had to take our time.
“And when she won the Group III I thought she would definitely get in and was shocked she was so far down the order.
“But I think for that reason she is the fresh horse on the scene and she is looking pretty good.”
Minhaaj is now a $9 chance for the Golden Slipper at Ladbrokes.com.au after $16 was bet early in the week.
Minhaaj has been to the races on two occasions for two wins with Golden Slipper jockey Daniel Stackhouse aboard both times.
The Exceed and Excel filly scored a five lengths win on debut in a 1000m Bendigo Maiden on February 15 and then went to Flemington for a win down the straight in the Group 3 $160,000 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) on March 7.
Minhaaj is likely to jump from gate eleven after drawing thirteen in the original barrier draw.
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Farnan continues to firm in the betting at Ladbrokes.com.au and is now the $4.80 favourite ahead of the Blue Diamond Stakes quinella of Tagaloa at $5.50 and Hanseatic at $7.
The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young trained Tagaloa has had one run in Sydney since winning the Group 1 $1.5m Ned Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 22 and ran home from the back in the small field to finish one and three quarter lengths second behind Farnan in the Group 2 $300,000 UNSW Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick two weeks ago.
Trainer Anthony Freedman decided against giving Hanseatic a Golden Slipper lead up run in Sydney but the colt did win a 1045m Randwick barrier trial on March 12.
