A win this Saturday by last start Sandown winner Pacodali can give two state trainer Lindsey Smith a third victory in the Group 1 $1m Magic Millions Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot in Perth.
Smith collected the major prize with his old war horse Old Comrade with back to back wins in 2000 and 2001 and Pacodali will be flying the flag in the 2019 weight for age Kingston Town Classic for Smith who has stables in Perth and in Warrnambool in Victoria.
“It would be great if Pacodali could win a Group I but he hasn’t sort of been a Group I horse in the past,” Smith told Racenet.
“We are more hopeful than confident.
“But he is going good, I’m coming home to Perth on Sunday and I may or may not trial him on Monday morning.
“I will see what it is like when I get there.”
Pacodali kicked off his career in Ireland before finding his way to Darren Weir’s Ballarat stables in 2017 where he was able to win five races for the disgraced trainer before being transferred to Ciaron Maher and David Eustace’s care.
Maher and Eustace were able to extract one win out of the Irish import in a 2000m Caulfield Handicap in June this year before the seven year old found another home with Smith at Warrnambool.
Smith has had Pacodali for six starts and the import finally delivered with a last start win in the Group 3 $160,000 The Big Screen Company Eclipse Stakes (1800m) at Sandown on November 16.
The Perth trainer set up a second base at Warrnambool in Victoria in May this year and already has had plenty of Group 1 success with veteran gallopers Scales Of Justice and Black Heart Bart.
Scales of Justice was able to win the Group 1 $1m New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 31 while nine year old Black Heart Bart surprised with a win at $101 in the Group 1 $750,000 Hyland Race Colours Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 29.
