Victorian filly Etana is enjoying the warmer weather of The Sunshine State in the lead up to the 2019 Group 1 $500,000 Treasury Brisbane Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben on Saturday.
Etana has had two runs in Queensland for a third in the Listed $125,000 Johnnie Walker Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) at the Gold Coast on May 4 followed by a win in the Group 2 $200,000 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben on May 18 and co-trainer Ciaron Maher can see further improvement in the filly.
“She has really thrived since coming up here,” Maher told Racenet
“When she arrived she seemed a bit flat when she ran at the (at The Gold Coast) but actually raced really well.
“She has gone up a notch since being here and her last run in The Roses was obviously great.”
“She was always a filly we had to wait for but I don’t think we’ve seen the best of her.”
“She just took a while to furnish but I think she is going to furnish again.
“She is very clean winded. It is quite interesting actually and if she furnishes again she might be a nice four-year-old mare.”
The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained Etana finished hard at the end of the 2000m in The Roses from midfield, indicating the extra 200m of the Queensland Oaks won’t be a problem.
Early betting at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Queensland Oaks has Etana the second pick at $5 behind fellow Victorian filly Princess Jenni at $3.40.
The David Brideoake trained Princess Jenni earned favouritism for the Queensland Oaks with her exciting win in the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on May 4.
On the third line of betting at $6 is The Roses runner up Aliferous just ahead of the Chris Waller trained Duchess Of Lennox at $8.
