Kiwi colt Quick Thinker confirmed his credentials for the Australian Derby with a dominant win in the Group 2 $200,000 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill today.
The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman trained Quick Thinker handled the wet conditions well to out slog his rivals and is now into $13 at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Group 1 $2m Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on Day One of The Championships on April 4.
The Rosehill track was rated a soft 7 but winning jockey James McDonald said that it raced more like a heavy track.
“The track is playing pretty heavy, you need a good fit horse that handles it really well because they are making hard work of it,” McDonald said.
“He is a proven wet tracker, he got through it well, he is fit and he’ll be a force to be reckoned with come the Derby.”
McDonald sat Quick Thinker ($2.70 favourite) just off the pace and had the Kiwi colt in the clear on the home turn and he out slogged his rivals in the run to the line to record a one and a quarter lengths win.
Zebrowski ($4) ran on from the back for Hugh Bowman to grab second spot just ahead of third placed Diasonic ($13).
