The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Savapinski was able to lead all of the way to win the Group 2 $300,000 7News Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington today.
Savapinksi ($4.80) was stepping up from a last start second in the Group 3 $150,000 Powerflo Solutions Stakes (1600m) at The Valley on October 28 but didn’t give her rivals a look in at any stage to score a rousing win.
Runner up Payroll ($10) made up plenty of ground from the back but was no match for the winner while Token Love ($21) battled on in the straight to hold down third spot.
The winner’s stablemate Prompt Response was well fancied in the betting ring to start the $4.20 favourite but after having a nice run mid-race, failed to run on in the straight to wind up0 in fourth position.
The Darren Weir trained Tahanee ($4.60) was also well supported in the betting but was never a threat to finish sixth.
Winning jockey Brenton Avdulla excelled in setting a smart tempo and knew that Savapinski still had plenty in reserve for the run to the line
“This little mare started as a restricted horse. I knew today having the speed they might not run her down. Brenton had already ridden a double on Thursday and I said to him you know where the winning post is,” Waterhouse said.
