A successful comeback by injury plagued Scales Of Justice in last Saturday’s Group 3 $160,000 The Big Screen Company Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield will see the rising seven year old being tested again at Group 1 level during the 2019 Spring Carnival.
Scales Of Justice was having his first run back from injury since November last year and blitzed his rivals with a three and a quarter lengths win with Dean Yendall in the saddle in the weight for age Bletchingly Stakes at the handy odds of $10.
The short priced $2.15 favourite Sesar was never in the hunt and finished eight and a quarter lengths from the winner in sixth position.
Scales Of Justice was the winner of the 2016 Group 1 $1m Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot in Perth and trainer Lindsey Smith said that on his Bletchingly Stakes win he deserves another chance in the top grade.
“We know he’s a Group I horse and I’d say a race like the Toorak (Handicap) here would suit him or he can go back for another shot at the Railway,” Smith said.
The former Perth trainer had recently set up base at Warrnambool and the win by Scales Of Justice will certainly give the new stable a boost.
“I didn’t expect that,” Smith said.
“But when he was in the mounting yard I was quite happy when I saw him, visually. I saw him against the favourite and I would have thought my horse was a better type than the favourite.
“But because so many things have gone pear-shaped in two years, sometimes you just cross your fingers.”
Scales Of Justice had to fight his way back to the racetrack from several injuries that included spinal and hoof problems.
“A lot of people have done a lot of work and it’s good. I’ve nursed him because I didn’t want to break him and I’ve spoiled him. He’s repaid us all,” Smith said.
“He’s a wonderful horse. He’s got the best character of any horse I’ve ever seen or dealt with and it was good for him to win.”
Scales Of Justice has won ten of his twenty-four race starts and took his prizemoney earnings to over $1.5 million with last Saturday’s Bletchingly Stakes win.
