First emergency Home Made has gained a start in the 2019 Group 1 $600,000 Channel 7 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm today following the shock scratching of Scarlet Dream.
Scarlet Dream was one of four fillies to take on the colts and gelding in the Queensland Derby and trainer Mark Newnham had deliberately bypassed the Group 1 $500,000 Treasury Brisbane Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben last Saturday to target today’s Classic.
Scarlet Dream was out for her morning trot today when things went horrible wrong and the Sebring filly ran into one of the running rails and sustained a cut near her girth, forcing Newnham to scratch her on veterinary advice.
“She went out for a trot and ran into a fence and got a puncture wound near girth,” Newnham told Racenet.
Scarlet Dream was prominent in the betting for the Queensland Derby at Ladbrokes.com.au on the basis of her second to Verry Elleegant in the Group 1 $1m Heineken 3 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on Day Two of The Championships on April 13.
Newnham gave Scarlet Dream one Brisbane Winter Carnival lead up run for a seventh behind Etana in the Group 2 $200,000 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben on May 18 and was happy with her progress heading into the Queensland Derby.
The Phillip Stokes trained Mr Quickie is the $4.20 race morning favourite for the Queensland Derby at Ladbrokes.com.au just ahead of the Chris Waller pair of Nobu at $4.60 and Re Edit at $5.50.
The John Sergant trained first emergency Home Made is rated as a $34 chance for the Queensland Derby.
