Newcastle trainer Ben Smith is hoping for a change luck for In Her Time at the barrier on Wednesday for Saturday’s Group 1 $700,000 Kirin Doomben 10,000 (1200m) at Doomben.
In Her Time is having her second trip to Queensland after competing at last year’s Winter Carnival where she drew no closer than barrier eleven in her three appearances at Doomben.
From barrier eleven in the a thirteen horse field, In Her Time finished fifth to Redzel in the Group 1 $700,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10000 (1200m), second to Impending from barrier twelve in the Group 1 $1.5m Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) and third from twelve again to Tycoon Tara in the Group 1 $500,000 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) .
“We’ve had a lot of disappointments in Brisbane,” Smith told The Courier-Mail.
“She (In Her Time) had three starts in the carnival there last year and didn’t draw inside 12 in any of the races.
“This year it’ll be nice if we get a bit more luck with the draw.”
In Her Time had a mixed 2017 Spring Carnival campaign and while she missed out on gaining a slot a in the $10m The Everest (1200m) at Randwick, the Time Thief mare was able to win the Group 2 $500,000 Santos Coffee Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick and The Everest consolation on the same day, the Listed $500,000 Sydney Stakes (1200m) at Randwick with Corey Brown in the saddle for both wins.
In Her Time was able to breakthrough for her initial Group 1 win in the $700,000 The PFD Food Services Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill during the 2018 Sydney Autumn Carnival for Zac Purton and then ran third for Damian Lane in the Group 1 $2.5m Darley T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on day one of The Championships.
Melbourne Cup winning jockey Corey Brown finds himself back in the saddle on In Her Time in Saturday’s Doomben 10,000.
In Her Time has already gained a slot for the 2018 The Everest and will race for the TAB and Smith is glad that has been settled to allow him to concentrate on a smooth Winter Carnival campaign for the Group 1 winning mare.
“Trying to get a spot in that race (The Everest) definitely led to added pressure last year,” Smith said.
“This year we don’t have that. We already know we are in the ‘grand final’,” Smith said.
“It allows us to really focus on certain races.
“We’re really going to rip in on Saturday at Doomben.”
