Juvenile Group 1 winner Prince Fawaz will have a light 2020 Spring Carnival campaign with his main goal being the $7.5m Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill on October 31.
Prince Fawaz is recovering from a minor leg operation and will return to trainer Anthony Cummings’ Randwick stables on August 12 to be prepared for the Golden Eagle which is restricted to four year olds and run under set-weight conditions.
Prince Fawaz’s best 2020 Sydney Autumn Carnival run was a second to Castelvecchio in the Group 1 $600,000 Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas (2000m) at Rosehill but was then well beaten when seventeenth in the Group 1 $1.5m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on Day One of The Championships.
Cummings said that following his run in the Doncaster Mile, Prince Fawaz had an issue with a hind leg that required an operation but the rising four year old has recovered and is set to return to work in the near future.
“He had an issue after he ran in the Doncaster with his near hind leg and had a little operation to fix that issue and it seemed to work really well,” Cummings told Sky Racing’s Racing HQ.
“He is sound and looks pretty happy. He has done really well since, pretty much grew from a boy into a man.”
“He is not due back until the 12th of August and the plan for him is to go into the Golden Eagle second up. Give him a shot at that and then have a break and then come back for a full Autumn.”
Prince Fawaz grabbed Group 1 success with his win in the 2019 $600,000 Magic Millions J.J. Atkins Plate (1600m) at Eagle Farm at the end of his two year old season and Cummings is certain that he is going to continue to be competitive at Group 1 level in during the Autumn next year
“He is certainly a Group 1 standard horse and I am sure that in time he will make that more obvious,” Cummings said.
Cummings said that there has been little interest in Prince Fawaz as a stallion prospect but he is happy to keep the Fastnet Rock colt as one of the stable stars into the future.
“I have a nice horse capable at Group 1 level and from a stable perspective I think it is fine,” Cummings said.
“The owners thought that there might have been some attraction. I think the fact that he missed out on his three year old Spring and then his Autumn was all over the shop.”
“He missed the start and then got a clod in his face at his first start. He lacked the exercise then for the second up in the Randwick Guineas, but his run at Rosehill was excellent.”
“He stretched Castelvecchio’s neck and beat the others fair and square.”
