The Everest favourite Santa Ana Lane is set to rev up his 2019 Spring Carnival campaign when he steps out in a barrier trial at Cranbourne next Monday.
The Anthony Freedman trained Santa Ana Lane has been installed as the $5 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au for The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 19 and assistant trainer Sam Freedman said the five times Group 1 winner will go into the $14 million sprint spectacular second up.
“He’s down to trial on Monday at Cranbourne and that will be hit first hit-out and then we’ll probably look to get him up to Sydney for his second jumpout,” Sam Freedman told RSN927’s Racing Pulse.
“He’s still a little way off before he gets to the races. This prep we’re looking to go to The Everest second-up and give him a nice gap between runs.
“It could end up a month between his first-up run and The Everest and we’ll give him a trial in between.
“He’s quite forward this prep and the trip to Hong Kong hasn’t harmed him at all and he seems to be flying at home.”
Santa Ana Lane scored the fifth of his five Group 1 wins in the $2.5m Aquis T J Smith Stakes on Day One Of The Championships on April 6 over the same course and distance as The Everest but then missed a place when fourth to Beat The Clock in the Group 1 HKD$16m The Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) at Sha Tin in Hong Kong on April 28.
Santa Ana Lane has been selected to run in the slot owned by TAB and will be competing in his second Everest after finishing sixth behind Redzel last year when running for Inglis.
