Winx’s stablemate Tom Melbourne has had some support in the betting for the Group 2 $250,000 The Star Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick today.
The unbeatable Winx is the dominant favourite for the Apollo Stakes at $1.10 with Ladbrokes.com.au while the Chris Waller trained stablemate Tom Melbourne firmed in from $31 to $21 before easing slightly to be $26 on race morning.
Winx is lining up to win her thirtieth race in succession at her first run back from a spell after winning an historic fourth straight Group 1 $5m Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley during the 20118 Melbourne Spring Carnival.
On the other hand Tom Melbourne broke a two year winning drought when he raced to a two and a half lengths win in the Listed $150,000 Carrington Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Australia Day to take his record to six wins from thirty-eight starts.
Waller is also hoping that Tom Melbourne can maintain his good form and gain more votes for the $5 All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington on March 16 with another good performance in the Apollo Stakes.
“He continues his quest towards entry into the All-Star Mile,” Waller said in his press release today.
“He still needs a few votes so if anyone has any votes left please remember old Tom!”
“He showed that he still had a bit of fight left in him after a brilliant win last start.”
Tom Melbourne has drawn barrier six in the eight horse Apollo Stakes field and Waller can see jockey Glyn Schofield letting the veteran galloper stride to the front under his own steam.
“He looks the likely leader by default and I would hope that Glyn would be able to restrain him to ensure that he is rolling along at a tempo where he is comfortable.”
Hugh Bowman will again partner Winx who will get a lovely run from barrier three as she attempts to win her third Apollo Stakes trophy.
