Veteran stayer Who Shot Thebarman tuned up for another tilt at the Melbourne Cup with a tough win in the Group 2 $300,000 McCafe Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) at The Valley today.

The Chris Waller trained Who Shot Thebarman will line up for his fourth attempt in the Group 1 $6.25m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 7 with a return to winning form today.
Winning jockey Blake Shinn wrapped up a winning treble after scoring on Blondie and Lubiton in the two previous races when he brought Who Shot Thebarman ($8.50) from near the tail of the field to beat his stablemate Libran ($10) by half a lengths.
The leader Cismontane ($8.50) held on well to run third while the odds on favourite Big Duke ($1.95) didn’t have much room in the straight and wound up in fourth position.
Waller said that Lubiton will join Who Shot Thebarman in the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November.
“He is a fantastic horse and he means a lot to the stable,” Waller said.
“He is a nine year old, he still tries his heart out, and he has come from well back today and sustained a good solid run.”
“He had to run well today (to run in the Melbourne Cup). Can he win it, I am not going to say, leave it to the punters to decide that.”
“He ran second in the Sydney Cup only six months ago.”
“He knows his way there and he will be there.”
