Trainer Grahame Begg will be happy to see his colt Written By chase a bunny down the Flemington straight in the Group 1 $750,000 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) on Saturday.
And Begg expects that bunny to be the speedy two year old filly Jedastar who only has to carry the featherweight of 44kg under the weight for age conditions of the Group 1 sprint.
“You’d think Jedastar with 44 kilos would lead for sure, so this time we won’t lead and have something to chase, which will be a big help,” Begg told the Herald Sun.
Begg has originally planned to run Written By in the Group 1 $500,000 Ladbrokes Oakleigh Plate (1100m) on February 23 but the Caulfield sprint is run under handicap conditions and the Group 1 winning trainer can see his colt being better suited in a weight for age contest.
“It’s been on my mind for some time, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense to run in it (Lightning),” Begg said.
“My concern is he’s a three-year-old high up in the ratings and he’ll be close on the weights to older horses (in the Oakleugh Plate),’’ he said.
“On Saturday he’ll be better suited by the weight-for-age conditions.’’
Jordan Childs is in the saddle again on Written By who has drawn the outside barrier in the eleven horse Black Caviar Lightning field while Jedastar will jump from gate two with lightweight apprentice Chris Caserta getting the mount.
Written By was the star two year old during the 2018 Melbourne Autumn Carnival when he won the Group 1 $1.5m Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
Written By then strung two wins together at Caulfield when he resumed in the Spring in a three year old Plate over 1000m followed by an emphatic win in the Group 3 $350,000 Catanach’s Jewellers Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m).
The Written Tycoon colt then lined up for his only appearance at Flemington for a fourth to Sunlight in the Group 1 $1m Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on the first day of the 2018 Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Written By has had one run back from a spell for a second, after leading, to Bons Away in the Listed $140,000 W.J. Adams Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield on February 2.
Betting for the Black Caviar Lightning at Ladbrokes.com.au has Written By marked at $8 and he will be lining up again along side of Sunlight who is the $3.90 favourite while the Lloyd Kennewell trained Jedastar is listed as a $13 chance.
